The Ghana International School (GIS) Parent Teacher Association (PTA) on 30th June 2017 officially handed over the recently refurbished women’s ward 7 to the administrators of the Pantang Psychiatric hospital in Accra.
Over the years, the School has been actively involved in organizing annual events to raise funds to support school projects and other charitable causes. One of such events is the Annual GIS PTA Sponsored Walk. The yearly event is organised in memory of two former GIS Students – Jason and Kerry Fung, who were tragically killed by a mentally unstable person. The sponsored walk also aims to promote mental and physical wellbeing and raise mental health awareness in the country. A good portion of the proceeds from the annual event is donated towards mental health care at the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital.
At a short ceremony held to commemorate the handing over, the GIS PTA Chair, Mrs. Clemencia Tetteh stated, “we decided to initially redo the washrooms and replace the plumbing. However, after several visits and deliberations we agreed to embark on a total refurbishment of Female Ward 7. This came at a total cost of GHS 114,000.”
“The PTA couldn’t have done this without the hard work and generosity of students, parents and teachers who constantly raise funds and go on the sponsored walk.”
She further went on to thank both individuals and organisations (including West Africa Hardware Co. Ltd, Amort Enterprise Ltd. Bamtex Co. Ltd, Mawums Ltd, Buena Vista Homes Ltd. Decor Trends and Sunlodge Hotel) who worked tirelessly to bring this project to fruition.
As part of its efforts to deepen mental health awareness, the GIS PTA went on various media platforms to educate and encourage others to join the effort.
Ghana International School looks forward to partnering with individuals and organisations who would like to support this good cause.
