Welcome to the Junior School

The Junior School is an ever-evolving and dynamic force at G.I.S., We are committed to excellence in teaching, learning, and holistic development. Our students are nurtured to step confidently and competently into the 21st century, with a curriculum that blends strong academics, character formation, and creativity.
Technology permeates much of our work, with interactive whiteboards in all teaching areas and IT integrated across subjects. Coding, robotics, and digital literacy stand alongside traditional disciplines, ensuring students are not only prepared for the future but are already actively engaging with it.
The hallmark of the Junior School is Kindness—kindness to self, to others, and to the environment. Anchored in our school motto, “Understanding of Each Other”, students are taught to respect, celebrate, and affirm diversity while developing a healthy sense of self. Daily affirmations and intentional opportunities to recognize each other’s strengths foster resilience, confidence, and empathy.
We believe that excellence extends beyond academics. Alongside literacy, numeracy, and inquiry-based learning, our vibrant co-curricular and extra-curricular programme provides students with opportunities to explore and excel in areas such as:
- The Arts: wind band, string orchestra, choir, visual art, talent showcase assemblies, and drama.
- Public Speaking & Debate: cultivating articulate, confident communicators.
- Sports: a range of activities designed to build fitness, teamwork, and discipline, with opportunities for house competitions and inter-school contests.
The Junior School also emphasizes independence and student voice. Children are encouraged to advocate for themselves, take initiative, and contribute meaningfully to their school community.
Inclusion is a cornerstone of our ethos. Our Special Needs Department, led by a dedicated Special Needs Coordinator (SENCo), works closely with students, teachers, and families to ensure that every child has access to the curriculum and the support they need to thrive—whether through in-class strategies or one-on-one guidance.
Our strength lies in our diverse and caring faculty, a team of vibrant professionals who embody understanding and compassion while giving each student the attention and guidance they need. Together, we cultivate an environment where every child is seen, heard, and empowered to flourish both academically and socially.
The Junior School is a place of wonder, kindness, and discovery. It is a community where students are challenged, celebrated, and prepared not just for the next stage of education, but for life.
We warmly welcome you to partner with us on this journey.

Academic programme & curriculum
The Junior School caters to students from year 3 to year 6 (7 to 11 year olds). While the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science follow the UK Cambridge curriculum; other subjects such as History and Geography follow the English National Curriculum with complimentary infusions and components from Ghana , our host nation.
Our Year 6 students write the Cambridge Primary Checkpoint Examinations in English, Mathematics and Science in the month of April. The papers are marked externally in the UK and allow the School to benchmark its achievements against other Cambridge Schools around the world. All students receive diagnostic feedback on their individual performance.
Students are taught Mathematics, English, History, Geography and Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) by their class teachers. Subject specialists teach Science, French, Music, Art, Physical Education and Information Technology.
The Online Scholastic Reading Scheme has started and encompasses all students who are able to read at their own pace progressing through a variety of diverse texts. The scheme also levels the students and set targets for progression.
The Junior School aims to expose our students to the ‘reality outside the classroom’ . We do this by incorporating field trips and visiting speakers who are experts in their field into the curricular plans.
