ACTIVITIES
Alongside the rigorous academic timetable, GIS strives to offer a varied calendar of activities that enhance the students’ learning and whole school experience. Every year, the school organises the following major events:
- UN DAY
- PTA SPONSORED WALK
- SPORTS DAY
- SCIENCE, MATHS & ICT (SMIT) FAIR
- THE ARTS
- THE GIS MUSICAL
- ISSAG EVENTS
- SPEECH AND PRIZE-GIVING DAYS
For more than 40 years, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has organised a 13km walk to raise funds for the psychiatric hospital, Pantang. Monies raised also go towards school projects as nominated by PTA members and parents. The walk attracts more than 400 walkers each and every year and is a favourite stalwart in the GIS calendar.
The SMIT Fair occurs every two years, with the next event slated for March 2014. The whole school programme challenges students (and parents) to hypothesise, question and investigate scientific problems based on a given theme. SMIT projects are judged by esteemed members of Ghana society who award prizes for the most imaginable, well researched and inspirational projects.
Students from Nursery through Sixth Form get seriously creative! The Arts departments organize multifaceted Art programmes in collaboration with other departments in the Primary, Junior, and Secondary Schools, encouraging appreciation and understanding of art in its various forms. As part of these activities, students have been taught pottery, weaving, fashion design, graphic design, as well as traditional art. The programmes culminates in a major exhibition showcasing the best of student art. The Board of Directors, parents, alumni, and friends of GIS are invited to witness this event.
Over the past five years, GIS has produced musical performances of the highest standard. Pasto performances include, The Music Man, Annie, The Sound of Music, Fame and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The musicals are staged at the National Theatre in Accra and it attracts an audience of at least 2,000 people over two nights.
Speech and Prize-giving Days are organised at the Junior School and Secondary Schools. It is a day on which the school comes together to recognise and reward the high achievers in each and every year group.
There is an array of prizes from Best in Maths to Best Behaved Student, which acts as an incentive for all students to aspire to do well and receive an award. In the Secondary School, the programme also acts as a graduation ceremony, where by Sixth Form students receive a certificate and a special GIS stole for graduating from secondary school.
Throughout the school year, there are many other events that take place, unique to each section or year group. In addition to events such as these, the co-curricular activities – of which there are of thirty of them – give students a great chance to discover or improve other talents or past-times they may have.
Either way, there are a lot of informative, innovative programmes implemented at GIS for all students and parents to benefit from.To find out more about the activities taking place throughout the school year, please check out the events calendar on this website.
