Every year within the month of October, GIS dedicates a specific day to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness. Dubbed Pink Day, students and teachers over at the Secondary School would come to school on the designated day in different shades of white and pink to raise awareness and help reduce the stigma associated with breast cancer.
This event, which is usually spearheaded by our Health and Wellness team had our nurses invite SSNIT and HealthNet on campus to conduct a 2-day free Breast Cancer screening for all interested staff. They also took it upon themselves to educate the men on how to conduct breast exams on themselves and their partners since breast cancer is also detectable in men. The response was very encouraging and it certainly was great to see them engaged and asking all the relevant questions they needed answers to. Medical doctors from SSNIT were also invited to a special Friday Secondary School Assembly to educate all our students about the disease. Students learned so much and enjoyed the question-and-answer sessions tremendously.
Beautiful pink ribbons, the most prominent symbol of breast cancer awareness in many countries were distributed for free by our nurses to everyone. Random photos of both staff and students holding Instagram selfie boards or sharing pink gifts amongst themselves were taken as part of our awareness campaign. It was a pleasure to see everyone join in the life-changing awareness campaign as early detection of symptoms pertaining to this disease can actually save lives. Go GIS!
