The Sixth Form programme at Ghana International School crowns years of a very rich, socially diverse and academically rigorous educational experience. The Sixth Form thus terminates high school or secondary school and ushers students into university. We therefore aim to ensure that our students are positioned to contribute to and benefit from tertiary education and the wider world. Our emphasis at this level is on the higher levels of academic expectation and preparation for complete social relevance.

GIS has identified six essential attributes; Critical thinking, Discipline, Effective Communication, Social Responsibility, Creativity and International-mindedness. We expect our sixth formers to actualize these attributes and also serve as role models to the younger students. We thus emphasize Leadership, Responsibility and of course Academic Excellence. We are hopeful that all our sixth formers will take advantage of the numerous opportunities offered by the school to equip them to become truly global citizens.

Students at GIS are encouraged to become all round individuals to succeed as future global citizens. Alongside their studies, students get involved in other programmes that enhance their learning and expose them to numerous non-academic activities in order to provide them with needed life skills for college and beyond. The following are some of the programs on offer:

The French Immersion Program

An annual trip to France is organised for students in Form 3 to Upper 6 (9th grade to 13 grades). The trip is organised with the assistance of ‘Sajours Internationeux Linguistiques et Culturels’, who are based in Angouleme. Selected students stay with Francophone families, attend French-speaking classes taught by French teachers and enjoy afternoon excursions and museum visits. These visits expose students to French culture and enable each participant the unique opportunity to sharpen speaking and writing abilities in French.

Community Work

Sixth form students are to demonstrate their communal responsibilities by engaging in activities to develop their local communities.

Co-Curricular Activities

Students are given the opportunity to audition for roles in the annual school musical production which is a resounding success every year.

They also have a range of co-curricular activities to select from. The co-curricular coordinators make this available yearly. Students are given the opportunity to institute clubs and social groups that they believe would enrich their academic experience. Among these innovations are the Leadership and Entrepreneurship Club and the Think Tank.

Students in Sixth Form are encouraged to give back to the school community and acquire time management, team building as well as communication skills through the following programs:

Study Works: Students in the top ten percent of their class are invited to join this program. The aim of the program is to academically support students in the lower forms. Students also learn study skills during the program.

Reading Buddies: Sixth Form students assist students in the Infant School to practice their reading skills daily and discover the pleasure of reading.

During the summer months sixth form students are encouraged to participate in university-sponsored summer programs as well as work internships. Some of the more popular programs include the Model United Nations, Yale Summer Program, GYLC and Lead America. GIS sixth form students have received a lot of pre-university training and college preparation skills at these events.

The School Prefect body is elected by the teacher and student bodies. This is an annual event where Prefects are selected from the Lower Sixth Form and are in office for one year.
