At GIS, students are encouraged to share their opinions and take the stage in front of their peers. The attributes of critical thinking, creativity, and the ability to communicate effectively are just three of the 6 core attributes that GIS students aim for in everyday learning.
Recently, our Lower 6th Form students in Mrs Petulia Joseph’s literature class discussed Chimamanda Adichie‘s Americanah. The book highlights racial discrimination, the perception of gun violence and ethnic identity. Making reference to gun violence at its peak in America, the discussion got even more insightful as students analyzed the book in relation to Donald Glover’s (a.k.a Childish Gambino) trending video, This Is America. The video depicts the current state of a particular country in relation to racism and gun violence through symbolic dance moves.
As an internationally diverse School, students are encouraged not to limit their ideas to what happens within our community, but to be internationally minded in their critical thinking process. Mrs. Joseph is an example of an internationally minded teacher who lets her students think out loud…in front of their peers and supports them in the process! #LiteratureReview #NoToRacism #NoToGunViolence #NoToDiscrimination#TeachersRock
