As part of GIS’ Annual Citizenship Celebration week, Form 3 students were invited to take part in a scheduled forum organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE). The objective of the forum was to educate students about the importance of tax compliance.

Ms Josephine Nkrumah Chairperson of the NCCE Gh and invited resource person explained that the payment of taxes is a mandatory financial charge to citizens required by the government to fund various public expenditures. She also mentioned that evasion of payment is punishable by law, relating it to two of our existing attributes which are, to be disciplined and socially responsible.

As the discussion progressed, students began to engage and ask questions. Amongst many interesting contributions made, Afia Dabanka, a Form 3 student commended the NCCE for their initiative to educate students at a young age and hoped that the institution was also educating people in charge of our taxes about the effects of misappropriating funds collected.

At the end of the discussion, students learned they had an important role to play. This would include reminding parents to file for tax returns and purchase items with excise tax stamps. They also learned that taxes are the resources every country depends on to build itself.

At GIS, one of our educational objectives requires us to promote positive personal values that cultivate integrity in our students and prepare them to become responsible, self-reliant and productive members of the global community. #ThinkCritically #BeSociallyResponsible #BeDisciplined
