The Ghana International School (GIS) has held its annual Speech, Prize-Giving and Graduation Day with a passionate call on graduating students not to stay away too long after attaining higher education abroad, but return soon to contribute their quota to nation building.
Students who graduated this year have gained admissions into top universities across the world in various disciplines. Principal of GIS, Dr Mary Ashun, who made the appeal to the 2017 graduating class, told the students that it was a great time to be in Ghana and the school would be glad to hear that they were back to contribute to nation-building.
“We can only do that if we begin by taking responsibility for our actions and demonstrating leadership as we tackle the issues that are bound to come up,” she stressed.
Speaking on the theme “Leadership and Responsibility”, Dr. Patrick Awuah, President of Ashesi University and Guest of Honour, advised students to first learn to lead themselves in order to become good leaders. According to him, that is one of the surest ways to build discipline and mastery in all that they will do.

Dr. Awuah advised teachers not to discourage students who are unable to catch up with their colleagues. Rather, he said, they should be accorded more special attention so that together, they can be tutored to the level of success they expect of them.
Dr Awuah further counseled the students to learn the spirit of service while in school because whatever they will learn will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Finally, he urged the students to stick to certain key tenets in life, including organising and planning their lives, sleeping well, paying attention to detail, asking questions, being positive-minded, and adhering to Godly principles.
Deserving students from Forms 1 to Upper Six received prizes in subjects such as Art, Accounting, Geography, Sociology, English Literature, History, Applied ICT, Business Studies, Modern Languages in French and Spanish, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
